It involves loss of memory for personal autobiographical information combined with unexpected and sudden travel and sometimes setting up a new identity. What Is Dissociative Fugue? The word fugue comes from the Latin word for flight, which reflects the nature of dissociative fugue in that involves an element of running away from ones present situation. Dissociative fugue is a form of reversible amnesia that involves personality, memories, and personal identity. This type of temporary amnesia may last hours, days, weeks, months, or longer. It involves wandering or unplanned travel, in which the person may establish a new identity in a new location very different from their old life. While dissociative fugue used to be diagnosed as a separate disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), in the new updated DSM-5 it is a subtype of dissociative amnesia instead. In general, the dissociative disorders involve impairment of identity perception, conscious awareness, and memory. Symptoms of Dissociative Fugue What are the symptoms of dissociative fugue? They potentially include all of the following depending on the case: During the Fugue State If youre in the midst of a fugue state, you may exhibit the following symptoms: confusion about your identityappearing to be unsure about your pastfeeling confronted if challenged about your identity However, its important to note that a person in the middle of dissociative fugue may not show any outward signs that suggest they are experiencing mental illness. Diagnosis of Dissociative Fugue How is dissociative fugue diagnosed? Diagnosis In the DSM-IV When it was originally included as a separate disorder in the DSM-IV, the following criteria needed to be met for diagnosis: sudden or unexpected travel away from ones home or workthe inability to remember your past experiencesconfusion about your identity and taking on a new onesignificant distress and impairment about these issues However, its important to know that dissociative fugue is typically only diagnosed retrospectively since a person in the middle of it may not show any outward signs and it might be hard for others to recognize. So, it is only when the fugue ends, either abruptly or gradually, that a diagnosis is usually made. Diagnosis In the DSM-5 Since the release of the DSM-5, dissociative fugue is now a subtype of dissociative amnesia (a disorder) and referred to as a state of bewildered wandering. Furthermore, in very rare cases, people may feign dissociative fugue for legal or other reasons. This would be uncovered during a complete physical and mental examination. Methods of Diagnosis An assessment for dissociative fugue would generally start with a physical exam to rule out medical conditions. It could also include neuroimaging, such as an electroencephalogram (EEG), to rule out things like epilepsy, head injury, etc. Once physical causes were ruled out, a psychiatrist or psychologist would administer a series of assessment tools and conduct an interview to assess for mental disorders. Prevalence Dissociative fugue is rare with the rate being around 0.2 percent of the population. It is more common in adults than in children, and also more common in people already diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. Causes of Dissociative Fugue What are the causes of dissociative fugue? Below is a list of some potential related causes. Generally, these situations involve some sort of violence or terrible trauma: childhood sexual abuseexperience of violence (e.g., rape, torture)combat violencesuicide attemptautomobile accidentnatural disasterscommitting a homicidesevere stress (e.g., marital or financial) While you may appear fine after the trauma, triggers of an early trauma could cause dissociative fugue. For example, seeing your abuser later in life or experiencing an event that reminds you of the earlier event (e.g., seeing a small fire after being involved in a tragic fire). In this way, events have the potential to trigger a massive reaction because they somehow make contact with the trauma in your memory. In addition, there is evidence that there may be a genetic link as family members of persons with dissociative fugue may also be more likely to experience the condition. The Link Between Trauma and Dissociative Disorders Treatment of Dissociative Fugue The outlook for dissociative fugue is good given that most often people recover their memory with everything intact. The goal of treatment is therefore twofold: To help recover your identity and develop coping strategies to prevent the same thing from happening again.To help you come to terms and cope with the original trauma that triggered the episode. Charlie St. Cloud is a high school junior who along with his younger brother love the game of baseball. Living in the small harbor village of Marblehead, Massachusetts, sailing and the water were an everyday part of life, however baseball was the joy of the St Cloud boy’s lives. Charlie’s younger brother Sam looked up to his older brother, and the two, sons of a single mother, had a very close brotherly bond. One evening while Charlie and Sam’s mother was at work, Charlie decided to ‘borrow’ the neighbor’s car to drive to Boston to watch a baseball game. On the way back their car was struck by a drunk driver and both boys were pronounced dead.However, in the ambulance, firefighter Florio Ferrente shocked Charlie back to life. As Charlie promised not to ever leave his brother’s side, he was pulled back into consciousness. It was those few moments of being â€Å"in between† that would forever change Charlie’s life. After a decade of feeling responsible for his brother’s death, Charlie forgets about his dreams and aspirations in life. Instead he decides to become the local cemetery caretaker, and every night as the cannons signal sunset, Charlie races into the woods to meet his little brother for a game of catch.Because of being in between life and death for that short moment, Charlie can now see spirits and guide them into the next realm. Sam chooses to stay behind to be with Charlie and every night no matter what Charlie is doing or where he is, when the cannons sound he is in the woods with his brother. One day as Charlie is cleaning up the cemetery, he meets a young sailor named Tess Carroll. Tess is getting prepared to leave on a race to sail around the world. After meeting her Charlie finds himself trying to choose between the past and Sam, and his possible future with Tess. Tess and Charlie spend a wonderful night together and the next morning, Charlie, like always has his morning coffee at a little shop on the harbor. This is where he finds out that Tess went out on a test sail and is now missing. Hearing this shocks Charlie from his â€Å"new love† state into a realization that Tess is dead. After Charlie finding out about Tess, he becomes very angry and then realizes his point in being saved that faithful night. He realizes that Tess came to him, and that she isn’t dead yet, that she is hurt and fighting to stay alive and Charlie needs to find her.He now has to choose between his promise to Sam, and his new love for Tess and their possible future in building a life together. Charlie rushes into town to find Tink, Tess’ right hand man, and explains to him that Tess is in fact alive and he intends to find her. Needless to say Tink thinks he is crazy but embarks on the search anyways because he wants to find her just as much. As they are sailing out to ocean, the sun starts to fall and Charlie hears the cannons, he knows that he has broken the bond between him and Sam and he will never see Sam again.With tears in his eyes, he says goodbye to Sam and apologizes for breaking the promise he made to his little brother. Just then Charlie sees a shooting star in the night sky and it is as if the star is pointing him in the direction of an island. It’s Sam leading Charlie to Tess, Charlie jumps up, thanks Sam and steers the boat toward the island. Once they get close enough they spot Querencia, Tess’ boat. Once they rescued Tess and got her to the hospital, Charlie never leaves her side. However at first Tess doesn’t recognize Charlie and it really upsets him.He gave up his brother for her and now she doesn’t remember the night they had together. Charlie still never left the hospital, and then Tess finally asked fro him, she wanted to know how they met, so Charlie told her the entire story. Charlie had finally let go of the past, and forgave himself for that night that changed his life. Now he was starting over with a brand new outlook on life and he and Tess were going to start over together. This book was very touching and heartwarming. It also reminded me a lot of Mitch Alboms books, especially â€Å"One More Day. They made a movie about this book simply titled â€Å"Charlie St. Cloud† even though the movie was pretty good, it doesn’t compare to the book.I love to read books and watch the movies; however I am usually disappointed in the movies. I don’t like how they take so much out of the movies to fit it in a certain time frame and this movie was no different. However it is still interesting to see the characters coming to life outside of your mind. I would recommend this book and the movie, although I would suggest to watch the movie then read the book, then you won’t become upset like I did. Remove tasks that fall into other workflows, exist for bureaucratic/approval purposes, and are outdated. Decide who will complete each of those tasks.  You’re thinking of one name per task here- because the moment you delegate one task to two people is the moment each points fingers at the other to complete the work (or†¦ push blame on the other when the work never gets completed). Figure out when the last task in the workflow needs to be done.  In marketing lingo, you can think of this as # of days before publish.  For example, if you need a blog post to be 100% complete two weeks before it publishes, the last task in the workflow needs to be done 14 days before the publish date. Now you know the second-to-last task needs to be completed 15 days before publish, the third-to-last task 16 days before publish, and all the way up the list to the very first task so you’ll know exactly when to begin the workflow. Accountability for each task within the workflow so you can efficiently assign the work among your team. That means if you commit to something, you’re likely to be successful at it. Go figure. And, that means if you commit to something AND communicate during that commitment, you’re even more likely to be successful. Consider that when you make a behavioral change in your marketing team†¦ The study goes on to elaborate: [†¦] both commitment only and commitment plus another treatment yielded sustained behavior change. That means commitment leads to long-term behavior change, therefore, long-term success. So. If you’re persistent right away, you’ll get it. If you’re consistent with that commitment, you’ll keep it. As a marketer, you likely hear all too often that â€Å"Consistency is key to success!† Well, for you to get organized personally, science proves that’s true. And, as far as your marketing’s results go, consistency is a major driver of success, too. Consider this†¦ A website with zero pages will get zero visitors. That means zero page views, zero email subscribers, and†¦ zero customers. A website with a couple pages may get visitors. That means a few page views, a couple subscribers, and maybe some customers. A website with 10 thousand pages will get thousands of visitors, thousands of email subscribers, and hundreds of customers. ^^^ If that sounds bizarre†¦ or you don’t believe me†¦ I know those three bullets to be 100% true because they are precisely what happened here at . Back in 2013, this is what traffic looked like at because we started with just a few web pages and blog posts. No one knew who we were or the pains could solve for them: launched September 23, 2013. A big spike! Followed by actual days of zero page views. wah-wah This is ’s traffic recently: That didn’t happen over night. A commitment to publishing at least  two blog posts every single week since 2013  gave us: Opportunities to test  various topics and angles to understand what our audience would be interested in. The option of failure.  It’s not possible for every piece to be a winner. But that gave us so many ways to learn what not to do, so we could improve everything we should do  moving forward. Thousands of keywords to rank on.  When every blog post targets a keyword, every search brings new traffic. Instead, consistently publishing at least two blog posts since 2013 (and frequently more now because we know publishing consistently works), gives us steady, long-term results that look something like this: It’s not easy. I fully remember late nights on Sundays and Tuesdays to make damn sure we published first thing Monday and Wednesday mornings. We were committed. It had to happen no matter what. But. We got better at it. Getting organized, creating workflows, and setting goals helped us commit to producing content that produces results.
